NOVA AND FOREST EDUCATION
May 30, 2026
Dear Friend

NOVA AND FOREST EDUCATION

This week we received an enquiry from an educator in the United States who is actively involved in developing curriculum and teacher training within the Forest School movement in her region.

The enquiry sparked an interesting realization. While NOVA has traditionally been associated with the development of perception, intuition, and whole-brain learning, we are already seeing these ideas finding a natural home within Forest Education.

One of our NOVA partners, Linda, has been integrating aspects of the program into the daily rhythm of the Wilderness Cooperative in Cape Town, South Africa. The results have encouraged us to explore more deeply how nature-based education and NOVA may complement one another.

After all, both approaches share a common vision: nurturing the whole child through exploration, observation, imagination, confidence, resilience, and a deep connection with the world around them.

This raises an intriguing question:

Could Forest Schools be one of the ideal environments for the development of attention, intuition, sensory awareness, and expanded learning capacities in children?

We invite you to explore this possibility in the article below.

And if you are involved in a Forest School, nature-based learning program, homeschool group, or alternative education initiative, we would love to hear from you.

NOVA and Forest Education

A Natural Partnership for Whole-Child Development

Forest Education helps children develop a deep relationship with the natural world.

NOVA helps children develop a deeper relationship with their inner world — their attention, imagination, intuition, sensory awareness, confidence, and perception.

Together, they support the growth of the whole child.

Forest Education develops the child's relationship with the outer world of nature.

NOVA develops the child's relationship with the inner world of perception.

Together they create a powerful pathway for whole-child development.

Why NOVA Complements Forest Education

1. Both Honour the Whole Child

Forest Education supports the child’s:

  • physical development
  • emotional growth
  • social confidence
  • creativity
  • independence
  • resilience
  • connection with nature

NOVA adds further support by helping children develop:

  • inner awareness
  • calm attention
  • imagination
  • visualization
  • intuition
  • subtle perception
  • trust in their own experiences

2. Both Are Experiential, Not Theoretical

Children do not learn Forest Education by sitting at a desk. They learn by:

  • exploring
  • touching
  • noticing
  • wondering
  • experimenting
  • playing
  • reflecting

NOVA works in the same way. Children learn through gentle experiences such as:

  • sensing objects
  • noticing subtle differences
  • using imagination
  • developing inner pictures
  • listening to body signals
  • sharing what they perceive

3. Both Encourage Deep Observation

Forest Education trains children to notice the outer world:

  • leaves
  • textures
  • sounds
  • weather
  • animal tracks
  • natural patterns
  • seasonal changes

NOVA strengthens this by training children to notice the inner world:

  • feelings
  • images
  • impressions
  • sensations
  • intuitive signals
  • subtle changes in attention

Together, they develop a more complete kind of observation.

4. Both Support Confidence and Self-Belief

Forest Education helps children discover:

  • “I can try.”
  • “I can solve problems.”
  • “I can take safe risks.”
  • “I can learn from experience.”

NOVA adds:

  • “I can trust my perception.”
  • “I can notice more than I thought.”
  • “I can use my imagination intelligently.”
  • “I have inner abilities worth developing.”

This is especially powerful for children who do not shine in conventional classroom settings.

5. Both Support Learner-Led Discovery

Forest Education allows children to follow curiosity.

NOVA also allows children to discover their own way of perceiving.

  • Some children may be more visual.
  • Some may feel sensations.
  • Some may receive impressions as words, colours, shapes, emotions, or body feelings.

NOVA respects these differences instead of forcing one fixed method.

6. Both Work Best as a Long-Term Process

Forest Education is not a one-off activity. It works through:

  • regular sessions
  • observation
  • repetition
  • reflection
  • adaptation
  • gradual growth

NOVA also works best this way.

When NOVA is included in the rhythm of a school, children can develop naturally and without pressure.

This is why NOVA is especially suited to schools, not only short workshops.

7. Both Benefit from Group Dynamics

In a school setting, children learn from one another. They:

  • encourage each other
  • normalize new experiences
  • share discoveries
  • build confidence together
  • reduce fear of being “wrong”
  • celebrate small breakthroughs

This group energy can make NOVA more effective and joyful.

8. Both Support Healthy Risk-Taking

Forest Education includes supported physical and emotional risk.

NOVA includes gentle inner risk:

  • saying what you sense
  • trusting a first impression
  • sharing an inner image
  • trying something unfamiliar
  • learning that mistakes are part of discovery

This builds courage without pressure.

9. Both Strengthen Connection with Nature

NOVA can deepen nature connection through activities such as:

  • sensing the energy of trees
  • feeling the difference between natural objects
  • visualizing with elements of nature
  • listening quietly to the forest
  • noticing the emotional quality of places
  • using nature as a doorway to imagination

The forest becomes not only a place to play, but a living field of learning.

10. Both Prepare Children for a New Kind of Intelligence

The future needs children who are not only good at memorizing facts. It needs children who can:

  • observe deeply
  • sense patterns
  • think creatively
  • trust themselves
  • work with others
  • stay calm
  • solve problems
  • use imagination
  • connect with life

Forest Education opens this door.

NOVA helps children walk through it with greater awareness, confidence, and joy.

A Simple Summary

Forest Education helps children connect with nature, community, challenge, and discovery.

NOVA helps children connect with attention, imagination, intuition, and deeper awareness.

Together they create a powerful pathway for whole-child development.

Ideal for Forest Schools

NOVA is especially well suited to Forest Schools because it supports the same core values:

  • holistic growth
  • learner-led exploration
  • imagination
  • confidence
  • resilience
  • community
  • supported risk
  • connection with nature
  • long-term development

NOVA does not replace Forest Education.

It enriches it.

It gives educators a structured way to develop the subtle capacities that Forest Education already values: attention, intuition, imagination, embodied awareness, and deep trust in the child’s own knowing.

Interested in Bringing NOVA to Your Forest School?

NOVA can be integrated into weekly or daily school rhythms, helping children develop attention, imagination, sensory awareness, confidence, and expanded learning capacities.

We welcome conversations with Forest Schools that wish to explore long-term implementation, educator training, and collaborative research into children's emerging abilities.
